The 2008 Spring and Summer schedule is set! The Friends of Riverside and Moline Park & Recreation Department have worked together to develop a great lineup of classes and even a bus trip in June. Details are listed below. You can register by phone, by mail or online. All classes will be held at Moline's Riverside Park Greenhouse (next to the pool).

Planning your Summer Shade Garden Saturday, April 19, 10am-12pm Using plants to brighten your shadowy spaces. Selecting, planting and maintaining plants for that shady area of your yard.

Mosaic Stepping Stone Saturday, April 26, 9:30 am-12pm Create unique stepping stones using materials provided or bring your own.

Intro to Backyard Butterfly Gardening Sunday, April 27, 2-3pm Basics including culture of plants, habitat, life cycle, and identification of butterflies common to our area.

Know Your Clematis, and other vines… Saturday, May 10, 10am-12pm Introduction to a spectacular group of plants. How to grow and maintain a healthy vine.

Tea Cup Bird Feeder Saturday, May 17, 9:30am-12pm Create a bird feeders small enough to use in a container, or can be used as a miniature birdbath in your flower bed. Bring your favorite tea cup or use one provided.

Children's Gardening Saturday, June 7, 10am-12pm Children will plant tomatoes and peppers to take home, and learn how to start seeds. In this class they will also learn basics about gardening.

Meeting Mrs. Potts Saturday, June 21, 10am-12pm This garden art class will create a small Mrs. Potts using terra cotta clay pots. She can watch over your garden the rest of the summer. (A larger verision is pictured at left).

Keep a Tidy Garden Saturday, July 12, 10am-12pm Everyday maintenance of keeping your garden looking well-kept. Includes deadheading, flower pruning and general tricks for cleaning.

Using Your Gourd Saturday July 26, 10am-12pm Cleaning and preparing gourds to make bird feeders or birdhouses for the garden. also painting and decoration.

Miniature Succulent Indoor Garden Saturday, August 9, 10am-12pm Create a miniature succulent (water retaining plants) garden. Please bring your own 6” to 8” shallow planter. Plants and potting mix are provided.

Let’s Travel Wednesday, June 25th, 2008 Cantigny Gardens & Morton Arboretum, Lisle IL Cantigny was the country estate of the late Colonel Robert McCormick . The Cantigny Gardens were designed in 1967 by landscape architect Franz Lipp to provide beauty throughout the year and to test plants new to the Chicago area. The gardens, now mature, are considered among the finest in America. After lunch (on your own) we will explore Morton Arboretum, which covers 1,700 acres and is made up of gardens of various plant types and collections of trees. A ride on the Acorn-Express will allow us to take a first hand tour of the grounds. Time allowing a possible nursery and dinner stop will be made on the way home.Deadline for registration is June 13 or when full. The bus will leave at 7:00am from the Moline Garden Center. Arrive early and enjoy coffee and snack. Trip Cost: $50.00 includes transportation and entrance into the gardens, arboretum and arboretum tour.
